Letter: Keep protests out of neighborhoods

By Mark Monroe, Vancouver

Today, The People’s Rights Washington, along with Patriot Prayer will be invading our peaceful Carter Park neighborhood to protest in front of the home of Vancouver’s city attorney. They will be protesting what they view as an injustice to a business affected by Gov. Inslee’s Stay Home, Stay Healthy order.

This is not about which side of the political fence I support. It is my opinion that private neighborhoods should be exempt from mass gatherings in front of an individual’s home when it comes to political matters. We have elderly citizens who are terrified of these protest. We have young families with small children who will be unable to go outside because of the intimidation they encounter. Lastly, we have people who have reached a breaking point because of the precautions they have to go through to protect their property.

Where does the Vancouver City Council stand on this matter? I would ask where the Vancouver Police Department stands, but I already have an idea, after reading Sgt. Pat Moore’s report on the last protest in our neighborhood.

Let’s try to all work together to reach an agreement, or enact an ordinance that keeps protest from both spectrums out of the neighborhoods.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
