Letter: Talk about options for students

By Chuck Cusack, Vancouver

Now that apparently all of the local school districts have officially decided to restart school online, I have a serious concern for all the students who, for various reasons, online teaching is not a very viable option and will clearly be disadvantaged.

Many families don’t have multiple computers, have special needs, or have parents who, because of work responsibilities, will be unable to assist their kids with the additional demands posed by online learning. And, unfortunately, most of these students are in the lower socioeconomic categories and therefore already at a disadvantage.

I realize that there may be significant logistical problems with having any students actually attend schools but shouldn’t that be an option, at least, being discussed? And, if having some students attend schools is not a real option, what about other options to make sure that our at-risk students don’t fall further behind? The educational health of all of our students seems to require such a discussion.
