Letter: Trump threatens Social Security

By Kenneth Campbell, Vancouver
Published: August 18, 2020, 6:00am

Donald Trump threatened to defund Social Security and Medicare on Aug. 8 with an executive order for a payroll tax holiday for everyone making less than $100,000, followed by a promise to make this “tax cut” permanent if reelected. He dared Democrats to run on raising the tax that he cut (actually deferred). The payroll tax is the tax that funds Social Security and Medicare. Removing this revenue permanently will ring the death knell for both programs, yet that’s what Trump has promised.

Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Battle Ground, promised The Columbian that she would vote for Donald Trump. It’s good when politicians tell us who they are.
