Letter: Trump hinders democracy

By Homer Berry, Vancouver
Published: August 19, 2020, 6:00am

Is there no end to what the president will do to win the election? Trump admitted he opposed mail-in ballots. Our president is deliberately trying to sabotage our right as American citizens to vote. Studies have found voter fraud is rare in U.S. elections, including in places where voting by mail is widespread. The Postal Service has the capacity to deliver all election mail securely, on time and within delivery standards. However, with new leadership pushed by Trump, the Postal Service is being hindered in doing its job.

Trump is also admitting he is blocking legislation for coronavirus relief because it includes dollars for the U.S. Postal Service, so it will be more difficult for people to vote by mail.

Election day is Nov. 3, so be sure to check your mail regularly about three weeks before the election and mail your ballot back ASAP. If you’re not registered you can register by mail to vote in Washington on a voter registration form, filling it out, and mailing it to your local office. Trump will go to any length to hinder voting. We have to preserve the principle of democracy, or it’s going to continue to get worse.
