New COVID-19 cases rebounded in numbers reported Thursday, with 48 positive tests, according to Clark County Public Health.

The new cases, up from five reported Wednesday, bring the county’s total to 2,378 cases to date. No new deaths were reported, leaving the total of those who died because of COVID-19 at 45 to date.

The number of those hospitalized with COVID-19 held steady at 19, and the number of people hospitalized awaiting test results fell to five.

The new cases were reported as Gov. Jay Inslee said in a press conference he was “cautiously pleased” by a tapering off in the number of new cases statewide.

“We’re hopeful this trend is going to continue,” Inslee said, but he noted that the state is far above its target of fewer than 25 new cases per 100,000 residents over a 14-day period.

The most recent statewide numbers show the infection rate at 109.2 new cases per 100,000 over two weeks.

In Clark County, that rate was 74.7, according to Clark County Public Health.

“We have to be honest that we are so far away from  success on this that we have to remain incredibly diligent,” Inslee said.”We have bent the curve down once before, but it came back. Some people might say it’s deja vu all over again.”
