Letter: Use trees as memorials

Since March, many people may not have visited Officers Row by way of Mill Plain and Fort Vancouver Way. There is a new school going up on that corner, but we lost the smooth flow of public library services and several stately trees and beautiful landscaping around the old library as a result. Just a barren corner remains as a “grand entry” to the historic area.

But let’s look for sunshine in this dark winter. There’s also a new school being built in my own neighborhood, and the design and construction place a stately tree once far out on the playground at the front of the new building. I’m hoping that 10 months from now, kids will be happily in that new building. Can the community plan for some celebration? Give those most at loss right now something to look forward to? Can we plant some naturally big trees in places where they can grow to their full glory as memorials? To all those we’ve lost, and to everything we’ve lost in the pandemic?
