An Oregon surfer is recovering after being bitten by a shark over the weekend.

Cole Herrington, a Seaside resident, suffered injuries to his lower leg in the Sunday attack, which occurred in a popular surfing spot in south Seaside known as The Cove. Fellow surfers carried him to a parking lot, an off-duty lifeguard applied a field tourniquet to his leg and he was taken to a hospital.

He underwent his first surgery Sunday night, his mother wrote Monday in the text of an online fundraiser. More surgeries were expected as surgeons work to regain full function of Herrington’s injured leg, according to the fundraiser.

Authorities said his injuries didn’t threaten his life.

Shark attacks off the Oregon coast, such as the one that injured Herrington, are relatively rare.

The most recent attack, prior to the one that injured Herrington, happened in 2019. In that case, a Pacific City resident made it to shore unscathed after a shark bit his board but missed his right leg by about 6 inches.

The most recent case of a person being bitten happened in 2016 off Indian Beach at Ecola State Park. The victim in that case, a Portland nurse, also survived.

The online fundraiser has raised over $5,000 as of Tuesday morning. Funds will go toward Herrington’s mother’s travel to Oregon and costs incurred while she stays with her son, as well as medical expenses his insurance doesn’t cover.
