Three letters to the Editor in the Dec. 15 Columbian all condemned Republican representatives for supporting one or another of President Trump’s lawsuits attempting to overturn last month’s election. Mr. Smith’s concludes that “these Republicans should be held accountable for their choices” (in the next election, I presume).
It is my view that perhaps the letter writers don’t fully grasp the reality of the political situation on the ground in America today. The three Washington representatives identified by name in the letters, Jaime Herrera Beutler, Cathy McMorris Rodgers, and Dan Newhouse, and the more than 100 other Republican House members who supported Trump (or were silent), understand that they hold their seats because the majority of voters in their districts are Trump supporters. If a representative’s No. 1 goal is to retain power, then what do conscience, courage, and integrity have to do with that?
