Solid defense the entire game, Lumberjills coach Jan Karnosfki said, is what helped R.A Long stay alive in the 2A district tournament with a loser-out victory over the Chieftains.

R.A. Long faces Washougal at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Woodland in another consolation game.

After a 24-11 halftime lead that included shutout out River in the second quarter, R.A. Long’s seven second-half points was just enough to earn the win.

River had two looks at a possible game-winning shot with 11.6 seconds to play, but was unable to connect.

River, which played without 2A GSHL MVP Jordan Ryan (knee) in the second half, outscored R.A. Long 11-2 in the final quarter after trailing 29-19 entering the final eight minutes. RAL’s Miranda Lomax’s hit two free throws in the fourth, “and we hung on for dear life.” Karnosfki said.

Lomax finished with 11 points to lead R.A. Long. Dejah Wilson led River with 11 points and Sydney Flores-Tucker added nine.
