Skyview erased a 12-point deficit in the second half, only to see the Eagles take the lead in the final minute to win.
Jace Chatman gave Skyview a 60-58 lead with 1:30 to play. Federal Way tied the game on a rebound basket, and after a Skyview miss, the Eagles took the lead with a 3-pointer.
“After that, we had to go to the foul game, and Federal Way made their free throws,” Skyview coach Matt Gruhler said.
The Eagles converted six of their last seven from the line.
Skyview (17-8) will play in the seventh-place game on Friday at Mt. Tahoma against Auburn or Olympia.
Kyle Gruhler led Skyview with 26 points, 10 rebounds and three assists. With his fifth point of the game, he eclisped the 1,000-point mark for a career.
Squeeky Johnson added 17 points and nine rebounds.
At No. 10 in the Class 4A RPI, Skyview was hoping to improve its position to get a top-8 seed in the regional round of state.
“We were hoping to improve our RPI with a win over a team in the top six, but that didn’t happen,” Matt Gruhler said. “Now, we’ll just get ready to play Friday, win that and hope for the best.”
