Letter: Government is counterproductive

It often seems like one hand of the government doesn’t know what the other hand is doing, or maybe they just don’t care. On one hand, our governor has stated that we are in a climate emergency and we all should take steps to reduce carbon pollution. Many of us are in accordance with this and have spent a lot of extra money to buy cars such as Priuses.

Now comes the other hand: Penalize all hybrid owners with a yearly $75 added penalty on car tabs.

This would seem to be counterproductive at best, causing a strong disincentive to buy these less carbon-intensive vehicles, and a strong incentive to keep buying the same carbon-intensive vehicles as usual. What are these lawmakers thinking?

We Prius owners certainly did not expect to be singled out for a large penalty after doing what we thought was good for the environment. It might make more sense to penalize large SUVs and pickups. Makes you wonder what kind of idiots are running this state.
