Letter: Trump is destroying diversity

It is a bad idea to be moving for more restrictions on immigration and shutting out the United States from other parts of the world. All it is doing is making it impossible for people to feel welcomed to the United States and making Americans look hateful toward other countries and other cultures.

The article by Colleen Long and Nomaan Merchant, “Trump curbs immigrants from six more countries” (Associated Press, Feb. 1) talks about the massive new restrictions in place surrounding many immigrants obtaining visas. The countries that Trump is restricting immigrants from have a huge Muslim population, and this ban is a racist way for Trump to push his opinions onto all Americans.

It is not good to shut out certain people and lose the diversity that provides the nation with multiple opinions and viewpoints about issues. People need to be able to legally obtain visas and come into the country feeling welcomed and safe.

Trump is making many people feel unwelcomed with these restrictions and the promise of a wall, as well as the idea that all immigrants are “aliens” who want to hurt Americans.
