Clark basketball teams swept at Umpqua

Rough results in NWAC South opener

The Clark College men’s basketball team couldn’t quite catch up with Umpqua in the second half, losing the NWAC South opener 70-59 on Saturday at Roseburg, Ore.

Clark (7-6, 0-1) lost the lead for good with about 5 minutes to play in the first half, however, the Penguins kept it close with several rallies in the second half.

Clark got within 50-49 with 8:27 to play, then Umpqua (13-1) went on an 11-2 run to extend its lead.

Sophomore Matt Garrison, a King’s Way Christian High School grad, scored a game-high 25 points to go with 10 rebounds for Clark.

Dylan Hushaw added 13 points.

UP NEXT: The Penguins face Mt. Hood at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the O’Connell Sports Center in Vancouver.

UMPQUA 70, CLARK 59

CLARK (7-6) — Zach Rivers 0, Dylan Hushaw 13, Colton Gorski 7, Zach Brown 5, Matt Garrison 25, Ethan Smith 0, Kevin Robello 3, Sean Johnson 2, Liam Clark 0, Bradley Bickler 4. Totals 23-54 (7-20) 6-11 59.

UMPQUA (13-1) — Gilbert 7, Lungren 15, Fredrickson 13, Benzel 10, Mortensen 15, Quinton 3, Campbell 3, Love 0, Wood 0, Yuot 4. Totals 24-52 (4-16) 18-25 70.

Halftime — Umpqua 39-24.

Women

AT UMPQUA 90, CLARK 51 — Top-ranked and undefeated Umpqua led 20-9 after the first quarter and never looked back in the NWAC South opener at Roseburg, Ore.

Jodi Thomasian led the Penguins (4-7, 0-1 South) with 16 points and three assists, and Kayla Morgan had 12 points. Turner Joy led with eight rebounds.

UP NEXT: The Penguins face Mt. Hood at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in the O’Connell Sports Center in Vancouver.

UMPQUA 90, CLARK 51
