Letter: A sobering touch of reality

Your article “Demand For Maps Fades” (Dec. 26), reminded me of how useless I have become. In the 1970s and 1980s, I was teaching geography to high school students in California. My preparation included college degrees in geography. This also included courses and experience in cartography.

My high school course featured significant time spent on map reading. Students used an atlas, plus city and road maps. After retirement, my wife began finding our way around with her iPhone and I seldom looked at another map. It is a sobering touch of reality to discover that what you once did in all earnestness has now gone by the wayside and is no longer needed.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
