FISHER-MILL PLAIN — The Humane Society for Southwest Washington recently received a $10,000 grant to support costs of its behavior modification program and its Larch Pet Training Camp. The grant was donated by the Pedigree Foundation, which awarded more than $825,000 to shelters and rescue organizations across the U.S. The Larch Pet Training Camp helps behaviorally-challenged dogs and puppies get adopted. “These dogs have behavior issues that would make adoption difficult, including resource guarding and anxiety. Many have also endured long shelter stays, leading to stress and deteriorating behavior,” Wendy Marsh, vice president and director of stewardship at the Humane Society for Southwest Washington, said in an email. The organization creates customized training and activity plans for each dog. Then they are paired with two inmates at Larch Corrections Center and train over six weeks. Once complete, they return to the Humane Society to be adopted.
