Letter: Vote with children in mind

“Think of children first,” said Mr. Rogers, but children are last when it comes to funding.

Kids have suffered under President Trump. He proposes cutting the share of budget spending on children from 7.2 percent to 6.45 percent, partly by ending 40 programs for children (firstfocus.org). He has discontinued Michelle Obama’s school nutrition program and drastically cut SNAP benefits (supplemental nutrition program). The president intends to end affordable health care and has reversed 100 environmental regulations. He continues the inhumane treatment of immigrants, separating families and detaining them.

Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Battle Ground, votes consistently with Trump and has voted against the stimulus bill, which would provide rental assistance and expand nutrition assistance, health care, unemployment funds and provide help for our communities. In this city, 43 child care centers are closing, displacing 400 kids. In Washington, one in six children are hungry and 1,401 are homeless (Clark County Homeless Action Plan 2019-2021).

Trump and his supporters pretend to protect and save children, but instead they harm children and cost lives. This is evidenced by policies and stalling of the very stimulus bill that would supply relief to families. Please speak out for kids and vote in November.
