Weeds vanish, peace sign appears at ‘Welcome to Washington’ sign along I-5 in Vancouver

A story in The Columbian on Friday prompted an act of vigilante weed removal at the “Welcome to Washington” sign that greets drivers on Interstate 5 in Vancouver.

The sign had become overgrown with weeds — an unfortunate side effect of the COVID-19 pandemic, which delayed much of the Washington State Department of Transportation’s spring season roadway maintenance.

The agency said it would send a crew out soon, but in the meantime, someone decided to take matters into their own hands.

Local resident Katie Harsany sent a photo of the refreshed sign, which displays a peace sign in the middle, after a friend of hers made the update Friday morning.

“He just wanted to do something good,” she said — and if maintenance crews end up changing it later, “so be it, but at least it got some momentum going on it.”
