BEND, Ore. — Two men allegedly involved in the assault of a protester at a July 11 racial justice rally in Bend have been charged.
Robert Thompson is charged with unlawful use of a weapon, unlawful possession of a firearm and menacing., The Bulletin reported. Darrell Goddard has been charged with assault and criminal mischief.
Thompson and Goddard were driving past the rally when one of them yelled a “homophobic epithet,” according to the Deschutes County District Attorney’s Office.
Protester Andrew Heller biked after the truck, asking why they yelled what they yelled, District Attorney John Hummel said. Goddard is accused of opening his door into Heller, knocking him off his bike, getting out of the truck and punching him while he was down, Hummel said.
