Letter: Do not support Referendum 90

By Karla Everett, Vancouver
Published: June 4, 2020, 6:00am

SB 5395 was signed into law in 2020 after years of public and political advocacy. It supports honest, age-appropriate and inclusive sex education.

There is now a ballot measure, Referendum 90, attempting to completely overturn SB 5395. This would be an incredible mistake for all school-aged children of Washington.

SB 5395 expands and improves our state sexual health education programs. It requires all public schools to offer appropriate, accurate, inclusive instruction.

R-90 is a scare tactic that circulates false statements about course contents. To support R-90 is to deny the students of Washington a safe learning experience that will serve them throughout their lives.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
