Letter: Paper should do better

In a moment where we have a choice to amplify the voices of those struggling to be heard or to reinforce the message of the status quo, I am deeply frustrated by The Columbian’s choice to run a cartoon so demeaning. In doing so, you have made a choice to support property over people, order over justice, and a cheap laugh over dignity.

Your paper has a platform. It’s poor form to “punch downward,” as the expression goes, rather than take an opportunity to challenge the issues sparking the current unrest and advocate for the deep systemic changes our country needs in order to correct our course.

If you can’t be better, at least do better.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
