Letter: Support sex ed in Washington

In the far right’s twisted philosophy, they think they are being discriminated against when we won’t let them discriminate against us. A perfect example of this is Republican opposition to the sexual health education bill that passed earlier this year. Republicans are lying when they scream about the bill taking parental control away.

On the contrary, the bill allows parents to opt their children out of any content they object to. So, by opposing SB 5395, the Republicans are actually trying to take away the rights of parents who DO want their kids to have trustworthy sex education.

The bill requires that sex ed must be medically accurate, age appropriate, and inclusive of all kids. LGBTQ youth are almost five times as likely to have attempted suicide as heterosexual youth. Given that suicide is the second leading cause of death among young people ages 10 to 24, and nearly 40 percent of all high school students report they have had sex, accurate and inclusive sex ed is critical.

Democrats backed the legislation that any caring parent would want for their child. Education that encourages healthy relationships and teaches kids how to deter sexual violence and guard against sexual predators and diseases. Support sex ed.
