KABUL — A roadside bomb in Afghanistan’s northeastern Badakhshan province killed 11 local police officers, officials said on Saturday.
A local police commander, along with his 10 men, was rushing to help other forces in the Khash district of the province when their vehicle was struck by the mine, Badakhshan police chief spokesman Sanaullah Ruhani said.
The account was also confirmed by a provincial council member, Ahmad Jawid Mujadaddi.
The Taliban controls at least 30% of the district, according to Badakshan police.
While the Taliban stopped attacks on international forces in line with a deal signed with the U.S. in February in Doha, the group’s operations targeting Afghan forces have surged.
The release of up to 5,000 Taliban prisoners was also part of the deal the group made with the U.S., and was set as a pre-condition for potential intra-Afghan talks.
