A counterpoint cartoon, or any “cartoon” making light of racism and blatant police brutality which resulted in the tortured death of an African American is insensitive and just plain wrong. This festering wound must be addressed by us, the white majority. I am a privileged, white woman. It is incumbent upon us to rectify the inequities and harm that our race has inflicted on minorities for centuries.
How many African American executives does The Columbian have working at the paper? If there were any, would they see the humor in the June 3 counterpoint cartoon and feel that it was necessary to project both sides of the horrific injustice on display? What happened a week ago was not an isolated case of harm and hatred on full display by some members of the American police force. Will The Columbian print degrading, nasty cartoons to reach an audience that doesn’t want to face the truth about what is happening to Americans in minority communities?
Present actual, constructive articles, not debasing cartoons, to demonstrate how we, as individuals, can come together and fight racism and inequities, show respect to one another, help one another and unite as the one nation we claim to be in our Pledge of Allegiance.
