Letter: Imagine a better climate future

As we struggle to absorb the news surrounding us — pandemic, protests, uncertain future — we also are in the midst of a climate crisis. Indeed, there is more unsettling news: “Heat-trapping CO2 in air hits new record” (The Associated Press, June 5). How we emerge from these challenges will have lasting consequences on several levels.

As a society, we have an opportunity to invigorate the economy with an equitable, clean-energy recovery, providing sustainable jobs and a more livable future for all. As individuals, we can support legislators, organizations, and candidates that are working for environmental protections and climate justice.

In a timely Earth Day edition, National Geographic provided two very different views of the future. One cover story was titled, “How We Saved the World: An Optimist’s Guide to Life on Earth in 2070.” The flip side features “A Pessimist’s Guide: How We Lost the Planet.” As we rebuild, we also must imagine a better future and stay committed to that vision.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
