Letter: Reach out to city council

By Don Steinke, Vancouver
Published: June 13, 2020, 6:00am

This year, our Legislature passed House Bill 2311, which says the state shall reduce greenhouse gas emissions 45 percent below 1990 levels by 2030 and 95 percent below 1990 levels by 2050.

How will that be possible if the Vancouver City Council makes the problem worse by permitting large projects, which most likely will increase emissions next year and for the rest of the century? How will our city council know you want them to stop making the problem worse, unless you tell them? Already, 150 cities including Albany, Bellingham, Hood River, and Portland have committed to stop digging deeper and to reduce emissions to net zero by 2050. We need to leave less of a burden for our children. Even now, ratepayers around the world are paying billions to remove the CO2 we’re putting into the air every day. Write an email to the city council urging them to stop making the problem worse.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
