MEDFORD, Ore. — A Jackson County grand jury has indicted two people who are accused of pointing guns at demonstrators who were marching in Medford to protest police brutality following the death of George Floyd at the hands of police in Minneapolis.

A grand jury Thursday indicted David Westmoreland and Marcella Welch, both Medford residents, on felony weapons and misdemeanor menacing charges saying they brandished firearms against Black Lives Matter demonstrators at different rallies, according to Deputy District Attorney Patrick Green, who is prosecuting the case.

On June 1, documents say Westmoreland chanted “All lives matter,” an altercation ensued, and two marchers formed a human shield when Westmoreland pulled out his weapon, cocked the gun and pointed it at people in the crowd.

On June 6, Welch is accused of pointing a gun from her car during a confrontation that a demonstrator recorded on video.

Both are scheduled to be arraigned Aug. 12. It wasn’t immediately known if they have lawyers.
