Last month we saw the resignation of Mark Stoker, veteran director of Vancouver Public Schools, following his remark on social media that many found racist. Reports on VPS show that children of color are disproportionately disciplined compared to white students. Teachers, staff and administrators are overwhelmingly white.
As school board members seek to appoint a replacement for Stoker, they must give strong consideration to applicants who are people of color. This is not a token move, but a move which values the perspective of someone who has lived the experiences of a person of color and which recognizes how governance discussions and outcomes improve when a person of color participates. It will demonstrate growth on the part of the board. More inclusive deliberations and decisions will improve the school experience for all and produce a more equitable environment for students of color.
