Letter: Protect vulnerable residents

By Gary Akizuki, Vancouver

With all of the focus on the pandemic, economic difficulties, and racial tensions, I want to note these events have a profound effect on our neighbors who have been affected by the loss of jobs who are the working poor.

Many of our friends and neighbors were already in a precarious state financially holding on to their housing and ability to pay for basic necessities including food. Any cuts to affordable housing, homelessness and safety net programs would be foolhardy and ultimately put not only our vulnerable friends and neighbors at greater risk, but will result in a greater need for even more expensive services.

The eviction moratorium has helped this public crisis and it is time to double down on that help to tenants and landlords with greater rent assistance, not less. Please join me in urging our legislators and other local officials to prevent this from becoming ultimately a greater and more expensive crisis by supporting this call to protect our most vulnerable friends and neighbors.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
