Letter: Mutual support equals security

Homeland Security? Foreign wars, constant surveillance, a wall, guns, tariffs? Now do you feel secure? No?

Somehow we got this wrong. True security happens within our borders and is what we give to each other. Have concern for the common good. Treat each other with respect and dignity. Use civil language and speak in measured tones so we can hear and listen to each other and respond calmly. Care for one another and especially our children. Support and protect our parks and common lands. Repair our infrastructure. Pick up litter. Clean our rivers and lakes.

No president or government can do this for us. True homeland security is what we the people do, from the bottom up, day in and day out with courtesy and concern. Turn our fear into loving our neighbor. Celebrate what we have in common. Build a healthy community. “A house divided against itself cannot stand.” It cannot make us secure.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
