Letter: Cities must lead on climate

In 1988, George H.W. Bush said that if elected, he would do something about climate change. Since then, every effort of the federal government to fight climate change has been weakened or defeated by the fossil fuel industry.

It’s time for cities to lead on climate. Last month, our Legislature passed HB 2311 which establishes goals for climate pollution limits. Its goal is to get to net zero and 95 percent below 1990 levels by 2050. Unfortunately, every step toward that goal is likely to be opposed by the oil and gas industry. They always say, “We care about climate change but the proposed policy will be ineffective and just hurt the economy.”

That’s why we need cities to lead. So far, Bellingham, Hood River, Eugene, Seattle, Portland, and 150 other cities in America have committed to developing a climate action plan. We in Vancouver need to do the same. Think globally and act locally.

If you want the city of Vancouver to develop a strong climate action plan, please sign this petition: https://tinyurl.com/sn3cfol.
