Letter: Mount St. Helens reverberates

While I was in Michigan, on a beautiful quiet Sunday morning, I heard the explosion of Mount St. Helens. The mountain exploded on the north side and the sound was heard as far as the Seattle area.

I was living in Michigan at the time and was on a telephone call with my husband who was in the San Juan Islands northwest of Seattle. While on the phone, I heard a loud “boom” and asked my husband “what was that?” He said that he didn’t know but mentioned that it was probably a cannon that was used to start a sailboat race in the Puget Sound.

After the conversation, I was watching the local news on TV and saw the breaking news story that Mount St. Helens had just exploded and a pyroclastic flow had devastated the area and volcanic ash was falling everywhere. Only at that time did I realize that the “boom” that I heard just a few minutes earlier was the explosive eruption of Mount St. Helens.

Yes, in Michigan, I heard Mount St. Helens explode.
