The body of a man who fell into the river during a hike outside Rogue River city limits was recovered near Grants Pass.

Remains of Daryl Gene Johnson, 66, of Rogue River, were found about 4 p.m. Friday near Schroeder Park outside Grants Pass, according to releases from the Jackson and Josephine County sheriff’s offices.

Johnson had been a missing person since the evening of May 22, when he reportedly fell into the Rogue River near the East Evans Creek confluence during a hike with friends, according to an earlier news report. Friends who were with Johnson said they saw him fall from a trail about 15 or 20 feet, and saw him get swept away. Jackson County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue made attempts through last weekend to find Johnson.

On Friday afternoon, witnesses spotted the body floating in the Rogue River, and the Josephine County Sheriff’s Office recovered it.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the body as Johnson’s Saturday after notifying next of kin. Police say Johnson’s death is still under investigation, and are referring their findings to the Oregon State Medical Examiner’s office.
