Letter: Washington state comes through

By Claire Johnston, Vancouver

I just wanted to express my thanks to Gov. Inslee for keeping our state from having an unmitigated disaster because of COVID-19. Yes, there is a lot of hardship due to trying to keep the virus at bay, but it could have been far worse if steps hadn’t been taken quickly to keep the infection rate down. Kudos also to Vancouver’s mayor, Anne McEnerny-Ogle, for being a great model for her city by wearing a mask and doing social distancing while working for us.

I also wanted to thank our state’s Employment Security Department. I am self-employed, and Washington has offered people like me unemployment benefits. I have been impressed by the ease of using the ESD’s website and their surprisingly quick response to my application, considering the enormous and unprecedented caseload they are having.

It’s good to live in Washington state.
