As I sat on Wednesday morning after the election, like many I was sleepless and anxious knowing the result would come down to three states and thinking about what that means.
I read with interest the recent editorial suggesting it’s time to do away with the Electoral College. I, too, am frustrated with a system that purposely gives more power to the vote of a citizen in South Dakota than my vote has. I would argue however, that elimination of the Electoral College doesn’t go far enough to ensure democracy.
The big question for everyone of course has been “who will be our next president?” Despite our current president citing “Article 2” giving him unlimited power, that isn’t actually the case. I believe Mitch McConnell has wielded more power as Senate Majority Leader with the authority to decide what will be brought for a vote. That’s a lot of power for someone who won his 2014 seat with a total of 806,787 votes, or .0058 percent of the total 2016 presidential votes!
It is time for term limits. Not just for Congress but the Supreme Court as well. I would suggest a 20-year limit, but remember, my vote doesn’t count for much.
