Residents of a Hough neighborhood duplex were displaced by an attic fire Sunday night.

Vancouver Fire Department crews were dispatched at 8:47 p.m. to the 500 block of West 21st Street for a report of a structure fire.

The first arriving engine found a one-story duplex with a working attic fire, department spokesman Joe Spatz said.

Firefighters stretched a water line into the house and doused the ceiling, successfully preventing the blaze from spreading beyond the attic, Spatz said.

The fire was under control in about 10 minutes. Crews were at the scene for about three hours to ensure smoke had been cleared from the duplex.

The Red Cross was called in to assist the duplex’s tenants, according to Spatz. The tenants living in the unit where the fire started were given housing, and their neighbor went to stay with family, he said.

A Clark County fire marshal is investigating the cause.
