Letter: Learn from the past

Spanish philosopher George Santayana said, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” Americans should read the history of the rise of Nazism in 1920s Germany, an educated, sophisticated nation at the time, and then consider what’s happening in America today. Faced with widespread economic problems, the working classes of Germany turned to a charismatic right-wing leader who blamed the country’s ills on a minority group and promised to “Make Germany Great Again.” Germany erupted in violence, led by right-wing paramilitary groups, and paved the way for one of the most evil periods in world history.
