Gov. Inslee’s decision to include fitness facilities in the most recent lockdown is a clear demonstration that decisions are not primarily being guided by science. The Washington State Department of Health outbreak report does not suggest that gyms and fitness facilities are a significant source of cases. The benefits of continued fitness center operation far outweigh the risks, even in the midst of this pandemic.
Approximately 1,800 Americans die from heart disease every day. This is more than the highest single-day death toll from COVID-19. Physical activity clearly reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease-related morbidity and mortality. Although the the Pacific Northwest is known for its plethora of outdoor activities, outdoor recreation is increasingly difficult as we enter the winter months. Gyms and fitness centers allow people to remain active, which is beneficial not only physically, but also emotionally and psychologically.
Gov. Inslee states he wants to avoid overtaxing our health care system, but perhaps he should first apply the medical community’s Hippocratic oath to “do no harm.”
