Letter: Protect democratic principles

Unsuspecting decent people thought life would be better for them under Trump’s leadership, a man who continues to prove his narcissism, his ignorance, with his current behavior. Not the wealthy, who became richer, the racists, the skinheads, the bullies, wanting someone to approve of their behavior, but the average person who hoped for Republican principles. They obviously misjudged the character of the man they hoped would be their champion.

We are taught the sanctity of our Constitution, the importance of a clear balance of power in government, that our democratic principles make us special, our vote matters. We the People means all of us. Time has proven achievement of these ideals a challenge, but I always thought those sworn under oath to uphold the Constitution would do so. The last four years have shown how naive that belief was.

A friend once said, life will keep sending you the same lesson until you learn it. Well, I certainly hope the election of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris indicates at least a majority has learned a lesson and will not let this atrocity happen again. We must remain vigilant, for many of those legislators, those who flaunt our democratic principles, remain.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
