Letter: Work to protect democracy

By Robert Cuti, Battle Ground

Well wasn’t that an amusing letter from Robert Kerr (“Bad news is that Biden won,” Our Readers’ Views, Nov. 17)? He is one of the few people who apparently is going to miss the whiner in chief.

I am curious as to Mr. Kerr’s obsession with the newly elected president’s “lively gait,” especially considering that the outgoing president can’t make it across the street without using a golf cart. He uses the term “hateful Democrats” and then spews forth vitriol about the new president and vice president based on faulty analyses that was surely gleaned from right wing media.

Since taking office, Individual 1 has placed his own personal and political interests above the national interest by protecting and enriching himself, targeting his political opponents, seeking foreign interference in our elections, seeking to end accountability and otherwise abusing the power of his office.

By voting to remove this man from office, we may have removed the cancer, but by no means have we reduced the chance that it will come back or spread. It will take a significant amount of new legislation to limit the executive branch pardon power, strengthen laws to ban presidents from receiving gifts or payments from foreign governments, better protect independent agency watchdogs and whistleblowers from firing or retribution, and require better reporting by campaigns of foreign election interference if we are to make any progress in protecting this democracy.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
