Letter: Work together to slow virus

My family appreciates recent safeguards to control COVID-19. Reactions of some leaders, like Ann Rivers and Larry Hoff, are dangerous and out of touch. Rivers failed to use logic, stating “data suggests it’s safer to be seated inside a restaurant or shopping in a grocery store than it is to be at home.” Would she believe it’s unsafe to go to bed because most folks die there?

Hoff’s hyperbole also divides and weakens citizen cooperation and resolve to control the virus so we can open up businesses with less risk to all. Would they’ve complained about British WWII requirements for everyone to extinguish lights when bombed? Facts: “Any situation in which people are in close proximity to one another for long periods of time increases the risk of transmission. Indoor locations, especially settings where there is poor or no ventilation, are riskier than outdoor …”

Good government benefits all the people, not just those who finance their campaigns. We all want thriving businesses and safe communities. To win this war, we must put party politics aside and think critically vs. react as though government is a competition between tribes. We need supportive leaders to end division and seek cooperative solutions. We can fight and collapse — or collaborate and thrive.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
