Congratulations to the Fish and Wildlife Department for their great work on getting the huge fish returning to the Little Washougal River. I’ve lived in the same house on the river for almost 60 years and have never seen a return like this. The fish are about 36 inches long and been running since the middle of September and didn’t stop till about Nov. 18. I’ve never seen this in the past. They normally run for three to five weeks, and the size is usually 16 to 24 inches.
The real question I have is why doesn’t the Fish and Wildlife Department use this information in a positive way and get the schools involved and bus the students from grade school through high school out to these different areas for part of their education. (If the school wants to park buses on our property it would be OK with us.) Only a handful of people have ever seen fish spawn in their natural state, and teach them about saving fish for their kids, grandkids and great-grandkids.
This proves that taking out the dams has nothing to do with the size of the fish runs.
