AUBURN — A driver of a stolen SUV was found shot to death after gunfire erupted during a chase early Tuesday morning.
KOMO-TV reports 911 dispatchers began receiving calls around just after midnight that a stolen white SUV was being chased by another vehicle, according to Trooper Rick Johnson with the Washington State Patrol. The SUV had been reported stolen roughly 20 minutes earlier, Johnson said.
At some point, gunfire erupted as both cars eventually went the wrong-way up an offramp to SR-18. The SUV driver eventually stopped his car on the westbound lanes of the highway near C Street, got out and tried to run away. He hopped the median but was found dead in the eastbound lanes, Johnson said.
Johnson said it’s unclear if the victim was wounded trying to run away or had been shot in the vehicle, but Johnson said the SUV was found to have bullet holes.
Troopers still don’t know how many shots were fired, who fired them or what exactly led up to the shooting. Troopers are working with Auburn Police to patch together traffic camera video an in an attempt to figure out what happened.
