Letter: Remain open-minded, selfless

I would ask all Clark County residents, especially leaders, to not be two things: closed-minded and selfish. These evils sink deep into our actions, causing division and harm.

What can explain groups of Clark County citizens gathering en masse without masks? A closed-mindedness to science, and a dismissive nature to fellow citizens. Eileen Quiring O’Brien shares this view, also closing her mind to the possibility of systemic racism.

Donald Trump supporters look past his policies that further marginalize the poor and disenfranchised, and his dismissive nature to science, environmentalists, teachers, and anyone who disagrees. Jaime Herrera Beutler will vote for Donald Trump.

There is evidence that human beings act in their own best interests. In other words, being selfish could be a human failing. But there is also evidence that hope is real, and that kindness and reason can dominate. But these require open minds, and open hearts.

Unfortunately, I see too many of my Clark County brothers and sisters with closed minds and an overwhelming desire to be selfish. Some of these people find affirmation in the actions of their leaders. I ask that you vote for those candidates who evidence views that are the most open-minded and selfless.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
