Letter: Trust doctors, not politicians

By Larry Kingsbury, Battle Ground

On Sept. 24, The Columbian reported at the top of the front page that Eileen Quiring O’Brien said during a Clark County Board of Health meeting that she had been told by doctors that masks really don’t help when combating the coronavirus.

At the present time there is no magic pill or injection that will inoculate us. We have a very limited list of possible tools to slow down the virus spread. If not masks, what process do her anonymous doctors wish to use?

This is not a high school science experiment. Her responsibility as a well-known public leader should be to offer opinions in areas in which she is knowledgeable.

Ms. Quiring O’Brien’s public comments serve only to cast doubt on the expertise and honesty of those who have spent many years studying in their specialty and then spend their working life trying to keep us healthy.

I choose to trust doctors before politicians when assessing medical treatments.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
