Oregon state troopers are looking for the person who killed a wolf in the eastern Oregon wilderness last month.

State police say the wolf was likely killed around Sept. 24 in the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest. The wolf was found off a spur road in the Skull Creek drainage area in Baker County. Police did not say whether the wolf was a juvenile or an adult, or whether it was a male or female.

It is illegal to kill any wolf in Oregon unless someone observes the wolf attacking livestock or in self-defense. Under Oregon’s current wolf conservation plan, ranchers must demonstrate that they’ve tried non-lethal measures to stop wolves from attacking livestock before they can kill them.

Anyone who offers information that leads to the arrest of a poacher may receive a cash reward.
