Letter: Athletes right to sit out

By Douglas J. Munson, Vancouver

I applaud the action of players in the NBA, Major League Baseball and other sports for deciding not to play their games as a peaceful protest of the shooting of Jacob Blake. There was no looting, no fires, and no shots fired except for one: a shot over the bow of sports leagues and team owners who could lose millions from this protest instead of the hundreds of small shop owners in inner cities who may lose their businesses and financial livelihoods from the destruction by “peaceful” protesters across the country.

When the protests impact the very wealthy instead of the middle class, positive results may finally happen. Will sports leagues, team owners and politicians finally listen? The protests by professional athletes may be a game changer (pun intended).

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
