Clark County records 17 new COVID-19 cases, one new death Wednesday

Data shows positive cases surged last week among people age 10-19

Clark County Public Health reported 17 COVID-19 cases and one fatality Wednesday, as new data showed cases surged last week among youths ages 10 to 19.

A man in his 50s with underlying health conditions died, bringing the county’s total to 57, according to Public Health data.

The 17 new cases bring the county’s total number of COVID-19 cases to 3,474, according to Public Health.

There were 139 active cases reported Wednesday, counting positive cases still in their 10-day isolation period. There were 28 people hospitalized with COVID-19 and 12 hospitalized awaiting test results.

Testing data showed the most recent positivity rate at 3.66 percent.

With 42 new cases, people in the 10-19 age group accounted for 16 percent of all cases last week, the third highest, but that number represented a 90.9 percent increase over the 22 cases reported the previous week, according to Public Health data.

The largest number of new cases was among people in their 20s. Their 59 new cases represent a 40.4 percent increase over last week’s new cases and accounts for 23 percent of all new cases reported last week.

The next highest group is people in their 30s. Their 45 cases represent a 40.6 percent increase over last week’s new cases and account for 18 percent of all new cases for the period.

People in their 50s accounted for 33 new cases (13 percent of the total), people in their 60s accounted for 23 cases (9 percent of the total), people in their 70s accounted for 15 cases (6 percent of the total) and children age zero to 9 accounted for 11 cases (4 percent of the total).

The number of new cases declined from the previous week among people in their 40s, with 23 new cases (9 percent of total) and people age 80 or older, with four new cases (2 percent of the total), according to the Public Health data.

The most recent testing data covers the week of Sept. 6 through Sept. 12, before the most recent surge in new cases. The data showed 177 positive tests out of 4,835 total tests. Recent positivity rates have ranged from 2.89 percent from Aug. 16 to Aug. 22 to a high of 5.12 percent from Aug. 30 to Sept. 5.
