Letter: Trump support doesn’t make sense

For four years now, I have tried to figure out why Republicans so vigorously support Donald Trump. Perhaps it’s because he defends our constitution. That can’t be it, because he only defends portions of it, like the Second Amendment, while attacking others, like the First Amendment.

Perhaps it’s because he’s an advocate for free trade. That can’t be it either, as all we have to do is look at all of the tariffs implemented since Trump took office.

Maybe it’s another conservative value, like aversion to deficit spending. But since Donald Trump took office in 2017, federal spending has soared to record highs, pushing the federal debt up more than $6.5 trillion to a total of more than $26.5 trillion.

My final thought was that it’s his religious conservatism, although without question he has played perhaps 10 times as many rounds of golf than church services he has attended during his term.

All I am left with is the people that blindly support this president aren’t actually Republicans. They are, in fact, one of Trump’s favorite insults, Republicans in Name Only. There must be such hatred for progressives, that these RINOs are willing to reelect such a morally and ethically derelict person, regardless the cost to our country.
