Vancouver police officers responded to three crashes overnight Tuesday, including one fatal wreck, all involving vehicles driving into light poles.

The fatal crash happened shortly before 7 p.m. on Northeast 112th Avenue at Chkalov Drive, Vancouver Police Department spokeswoman Kim Kapp said in an email.

A 79-year-old driver was southbound on 112th Avenue, near where the street becomes Chkalov Drive, when he left the roadway and struck a metal light pole, Kapp said.

The man, who was not identified by police, was taken to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center and pronounced dead. Traffic unit investigators are continuing to look into the cause of the crash.

The second crash happened at 1:41 a.m. Wednesday in the 15500 block of Northeast Fourth Plain Boulevard.

Two luxury cars, a Maserati and Jaguar, crashed into each other, and then one of the vehicles knocked over a light pole, Kapp said. The drivers of both vehicles fled the scene, but a witness told police the cars appeared to be racing, she said.

The owners of both vehicles reported that they allowed people unknown to them borrow their cars, according to the police department. Officers are continuing to investigate the circumstances.

The third crash happened at 3:08 a.m. Wednesday at Southeast McGillivray Boulevard and Talton Avenue.

A Chevrolet Silverado was traveling east on McGillivray, approaching the intersection, when it drove into a light pole in the road’s center median, according to the police department.

The driver of the truck fled the scene but was later identified and arrested, Kapp said.
