Letter: What would McConnell do?

I almost choked on my morning coffee when I read Tana Aichele’s letter “Executive order is waste of energy” (Our Readers’ Views, April 14). She writes that while Democrats criticized the use of executive orders under Trump, they are now OK with them under Biden. She goes on to complain that Biden’s creation of a commission to study the Supreme Court is a waste of time and money.

Because of politically motivated obstructionism, the use of executive orders has become the only way for the president to accomplish anything he promised to do. And although both parties are guilty of creating this situation, Republicans have raised obstructionist tactics to a high art. They have become the party of “No We Can’t.” And Sen. Mitch McConnell had no qualms about ignoring well-established decorum in blatantly stacking the Supreme Court with conservative justices.

It’s time for Dems to take off the gloves and fight fire with fire. Neutralize the filibuster, protect voting rights and do whatever is necessary to rebalance the Supreme Court. If you think that’s extreme, ask yourself: What would McConnell do?
